Canyoneering in Arizona

I may be bias but Arizona has some of the most incredibly diverse back country canyoneering you can find! From exploring the red rocks of Sedona to bushwhacking through the forests of Payson, Arizona will keep you AWmazed. Below are a few of the incredible canyoneering and rappelling trips we highly recommend to check off your bucket list! These adventures range from beginner-advanced so make sure you are well prepared before you go. HIGHLY advise checking the weather prior to starting your trip as flash floods can lead to injuries and/or death.

Gear

  • Wet suit
  • Neoprene socks & gloves
  • Helmet
  • Walkie-Talkie
  • Shoes (La Sportiva has the best grip)
  • Canyon keg (On Rope Canyoneering has great ones!)
  • Canyon bag (we love Petzl)
  • Harness
  • Carabiners
  • Rappel device
  • Rope x 2: Length of rope will be determined by highest rappel so do your homework before you go!
Payson, Arizona
  • Difficulty: beginner-intermediate
  • Total Time: 2-5 hours
  • Extras: If water level is high enough you can cliff jump down the canyon
  • Difficulty: intermediate – advanced (3A II)
  • Total Time: 2-4hours
  • Rappels: 4, max ht. 170ft
  • Shuttling:
    • You don’t need two cars if you don’t mind walking 1-1.5 miles
    • Park at:  34.8933, -111.8650, where you will start and then walk back to your car, easy walk along the road!
  • You will need to purchase a parking permit at the parking kiosk
  • I highly recommend visiting the sight RopeWiki for detailed information on this rappel! They have put together a great interactive map that you can save the locations onto your mobile google maps and then save an offline version to take with you as service is not reliable inside the canyon.
