2 Cultural Highlights

1.
The Wuppertal Schwebebahn.
It’s fun to say, and even more interesting to ride.

“What the heck is a Schwebebahn?,” you ask?

It translates to “floating railway,” and it’s the main form of transportation in Wuppertal, Germany.

It’s like a train, but it includes the following interesting features:

  • Passenger cars of the Schwebebahn are suspended by a single rail as they “float” and glide 40 feet in the air, which is roughly the height of a large construction crane.
  • It zooms up to a speed of 60 kilometers per hour (37 mph)
  • It’s extremely safe and efficient, navigating the hilly and complex terrain of Wuppertal without the need for extensive ground-level infrastructure.
  • Rather than crossing the Wupper River many times in the city, passengers fly above it with a bird’s-eye view. They enjoy stunning views of the surrounding city and nature.
  • This engineering feat sounds futuristic, but it’s been operational since 1901.

Interesting, right?

Schwebebahn. Autobahn. What’s next, German engineers?

2.
Heidelberg: A Historic Gem
Last week, the stars aligned, and we explored my absolute favorite city in Germany.

What’s special about Heidelberg?

In no particular order, here are a few highlights:

  • Heidelberg Castle: Heidelberg is home to the stunning Heidelberg Castle, perched majestically atop a hill overlooking the city. It’s a blend of Renaissance and Gothic architecture, and its imposing ruins offer breathtaking views of the Neckar River valley.
  • Germany’s Oldest University: Heidelberg University, founded in 1386, holds the title of Germany’s oldest university and is one of the most prestigious educational institutions in the country.
  • Marktplatz: The city’s main square, Marktplatz, is a vibrant hub where you can see the impressive Heidelberg Town featuring the downhill, fountains, historic churches and facades.
  • The Bridge Monkey: The Alte Brücke (Old Bridge) is adorned with a charming bronze monkey statue. Rubbing the monkey’s mirror-like polished fingers is believed to bring good luck and ensure your return to Heidelberg.
  • German Romanticism: Heidelberg played a significant role in the German Romantic movement, attracting poets and writers like Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Heinrich Heine, who found inspiration in its picturesque landscapes.
  • Romantic Getaway: Heidelberg’s idyllic setting has made it a popular destination for couples seeking a romantic getaway. Many lovebirds leave engraved padlocks on the Old Bridge as a symbol of their eternal love.
  • Panoramic Views: From the castle’s courtyard, visitors are treated to panoramic views of the Neckar River valley and the picturesque surrounding landscape. This breathtaking scenery has inspired artists, writers, and visitors alike for centuries.
  • The Great Tun: Inside Heidelberg Castle, you’ll find the “Großes Fass” or Great Tun, one of the largest wine barrels in the world. It could hold over 58,000 gallons of wine, enough to quench the thirst of the entire town!
  • Majestic Ruins: The Heidelberg Castle stands as an awe-inspiring testament to centuries of history. Its majestic ruins, a blend of Renaissance and Gothic architecture, overlook the city and offer breathtaking views of the Neckar River valley. Showcase the city’s rich history, cultural heritage, and its unique charm, making it a must-visit destination for travelers from around the world

2 Brief Stories

1.
When Elephants Fly…or Fall
Tuffi was a three-year-old female elephant who weighed thousands of pounds.

On July 21, 1950, the Althoff Circus came up with an audacious idea to promote its upcoming show.
They decided to transport Tuffi, a young and hefty elephant, aboard the Schwebebahn monorail.

As the ride began, Tuffi found herself in an unfamiliar and precarious situation. Overwhelmed by fear or confusion, she panicked. In a moment of sheer terror, she broke through the side of the monorail car.

Plunging from a height of about 30 feet, she hurtled down towards the ground below. Fate was on her side that day, as the train was traversing over the Wupper River. With a mighty splash, Tuffi landed in the water below.

Miraculously, despite the alarming ordeal, the young elephant suffered only minor injuries. Tuffi, remarkably resilient, would go on to live another 39 years, becoming a living legend and a remarkable tale to recount for years to come.

It etched a lasting memory in the history of the Schwebebahn Wuppertal, forever entwining the fate of the young circus elephant with the iconic monorail system.

Cheers to Family Fun!
When you’re traversing the globe for a year, finding family is like discovering treasure.

Tom and Kara, living in Mittelbrunn, Germany, welcomed us with open arms, making us feel right at home. They are the ultimate hosts, and we feel grateful for the change of pace this leg of our journey brings.

With their adorable three-month-old, Amelia, as a sidekick, they have given us invaluable crash course on parenting that will serve us well someday. Amelia is a model 3 month old. Her smile is so bright, it could power a small village.

The real fun began with our “friendly” board game battles. Settlers of Catan, and Rummikub. The laughter and occasional competitive exchanges brought us even closer together, right?

In Mittelbrunn, we experienced the perfect blend of family and fun, making memories that will last a lifetime.

Tom and Kara, thank you for being the exceptional hosts and making this leg of our journey unforgettable.
